Weather Plan β Checking In & Switching on a Dime
The one truly weather-locked piece of the whole trip is the Lutsen alpine slide Thursday at 2pm β it closes for any moisture on the track (rain, mist, or dense fog), not just heavy rain. Everything else on the itinerary tolerates a drizzle. Here's when to check, and what to do if the slide's a no-go.
When to check
Three levels of backup
Level 1 β small disruption Thursday: ride it out same-day
If it's just an off hour or two of drizzle/mist, no need to change days:
- Ride the gondola anyway β it's enclosed, so light rain doesn't stop it, and the kids still get the mountaintop view and Summit Chalet.
- Stretch Grandview Park and the winery β both already on the day's plan, and the winery has covered firepit seating and a food truck.
- Head back to Bluefin a bit early for the indoor pool instead of losing the afternoon.
Level 2 β swap Wednesday and Thursday
If Wednesday night's forecast shows Thursday is a washout but Wednesday (or the Wednesday you haven't had yet β i.e. you check Tuesday night too) looks clear, just swap the two days: do Grand Marais + Lutsen on Wednesday, and push the Cascade River/Temperance River/on-property day to Thursday. Both days are self-contained, so the swap is clean. It just means moving three things:
- Call Lutsen to shift the alpine slide/gondola tickets to the new date
- Move the Bluefin Grille reservation to whichever evening is now "Wednesday" in the new order
- Order World's Best Donuts for pickup on the new Grand Marais day instead
Level 3 β backup-backup: push the whole day to Friday
If neither Wednesday nor Thursday cooperate, move the entire Grand Marais + Lutsen day to Friday and use it as the drive-home day, rather than losing it:
- Check out of Bluefin at 11am as planned
- Drive north to Grand Marais (~30 min) for donuts, Artist's Point, and the harbor
- Drive to Lutsen (~40 min) for the gondola + alpine slide
- Continue straight home to Minneapolis from Lutsen β no need to double back to Bluefin
Trade-off: this means skipping Sugarloaf Cove and the Volcanic Rock Talk, and a longer, later drive home β but since Friday already has no rush to get back, that's an acceptable swap. Thursday itself becomes an open, unscheduled day at the resort (repeat whatever the kids liked best β pool, kayaking, agate hunting, playground).
What rain does not ruin
Tuesday, Sept 1 β Drive Day + Arrival
Wednesday, Sept 2 β Waterfalls + On-Property Day
Option B: Indoor pool β hot tub + sauna for adults
Option C β recommended pairing: Resort grounds lakewalk + playground + agate hunting on Bluefin's own ledgerock shoreline AGATE #2 β this is the most relaxed, unhurried agate window of the whole trip since there's no drive and no clock. Bring the mesh bags and spray bottle.
Thursday, Sept 3 β Grand Marais + Lutsen Day
Friday, Sept 4 β Last Resort Morning, Check Out by 11am
π DIY Agate Hunting Guide
Minnesota's state gemstone since 1969, Lake Superior agates show up on nearly every rocky beach on the North Shore. This is a fully self-guided activity β no reservation, no resort dependency β with a window built into four different days of the itinerary, to do whenever the moment allows.
How to spot one (5yo version)
- Stripes β bands of red, orange, tan, or yellow, like a tiny target or a slice of a rock candy
- Shiny and smooth β waxy, almost like it's been polished, even though nobody polished it
- See-through-ish β hold it up to the sun; a real agate glows a little at the edges
- Small β most are between an almond and a walnut in size
Best technique
- Spray dry-looking rocks with the water bottle rather than walking back and forth to the waterline β saves a hundred trips for little legs.
- Dig down a few inches where rocks are wet, not just the surface layer β waves sort the best rocks just under the top layer.
- Walk facing the sun so backlit stones glow and banding shows up more easily.
- Best conditions: right after wind or rain pushes new rock ashore. If it rained overnight or the lake was choppy the evening before, that morning's beach is prime. A calm, dry stretch (like most of your forecast) still works fine β the spray bottle does the job of "wetting" without needing a storm.
Best spots on your itinerary
1. Sugarloaf Cove shoreline (Friday, after checkout) β best overall
Rocky, wave-sorted shoreline at the end of the 1.3-mile loop trail; multiple family blogs single this out as a top toddler wading/rock beach. Unhurried, on your way home, no extra driving.
2. Bluefin Bay's own ledgerock shoreline (Wednesday afternoon) β most relaxed
Zero drive time, zero schedule pressure β the best window to actually sit and dig rather than squeeze it between other stops.
3. Grand Marais harbor beach (Thursday, 10:15am) β most scenic
Pebble beach right downtown, flat and stroller-friendly; good for a quick 10β15 minute hunt woven into the rock-skipping you're already doing at the harbor.
Buy-before-you-fly kit list
Mesh drawstring bags (2)
One per kid for collecting β search "small mesh drawstring pouches" on Amazon. A few dollars each; also doubles as a beach-toy bag.
Kid-sized garden hand rake/cultivator
For moving rocks aside without bending over constantly β search "children's garden hand rake tool."
Small spray bottle
Fill with water once you're there (don't fly with liquid) β a 4β8oz spray bottle for "wetting" rocks in place.
Magnifying glass
The 5yo will love being the "official inspector" β a durable kid's magnifier, not glass/breakable.
Field guide (optional)
Lake Superior Rocks and Minerals by Bob Lynch & Dan R. Lynch β the standard pocket reference, good for the ride or for evenings identifying the day's finds.
Small trowel (optional)
For digging a few inches into wet rock layers at Sugarloaf Cove or Bluefin's shoreline.
Notes & Considerations
Packing List β Flying In, No Gear
- Carrier for the 2yo β essential for every trail on this itinerary
- Stroller β harbor/downtown transport and a backup nap vehicle
- Layers, every day β low 60s highs, colder near the lake and at night
- Swimsuits in the day bag β indoor pool happens more than once
- Empty tote/small backpack for rocks β both kids will collect everywhere, not just at designated agate stops
- Agate hunting kit β mesh bags, hand rake, spray bottle, magnifying glass, optional field guide/trowel (see Agate Guide tab)
- Offline maps + boatnerd.com downloaded before you lose signal north of Duluth
Key Phone Numbers
Full prep checklist, bucketed by timing, is on the Do Ahead of Time tab.
